The short answer
A reach drop is a signal to investigate, not proof of a shadowban. Check Account Status, look for recommendation restrictions and compare similar content over consistent periods before deciding what to change.
Define the change you are investigating
“My reach is down” can describe many situations. One Reel may have underperformed, non-follower discovery may have fallen, or the entire profile may have a restriction. Begin with a specific question: which metric changed, for which audience, over what period?
Write down the date you first noticed the difference. If you manage several profiles, record which account is affected. Avoid combining the figures of different accounts or comparing one exceptional post with the next ordinary one.
Check the account’s own notices
Look in the current app settings for Account Status and any information about recommendation eligibility or removed content. Instagram’s explanation of ranking discusses the difference between recommendation rules and other platform rules. Use the platform’s own notices as the starting point for an enforcement-related diagnosis.
Record the exact restriction, affected content and any available review option. If no restriction is shown, keep that observation separate from the reach data. The absence of a visible notice does not explain every performance change, but a vague label should not replace evidence.
Compare like with like
Use the same length of time and comparable content formats. If you published fewer posts this week, total reach may change even if individual posts perform similarly. Split the review into followers and non-followers where those figures are available.
- Compare Reels with Reels, rather than with Stories.
- Record how many posts were published in each period.
- Note changes to topic, format or posting frequency.
- Distinguish profile-wide changes from one post’s results.
This is an analysis framework, not a test that proves or disproves every possible restriction. Its purpose is to make the next decision more precise.
Take a step that matches the evidence
If the account shows a restriction and offers a review, address that specific issue. Keep the explanation consistent with the content and the stated reason. If profile information is flagged, review the notice before changing unrelated settings.
If the evidence points to content performance, test one deliberate change at a time. Keep a note of the change and compare an appropriate period afterwards. Deleting a large amount of content at once makes the timeline harder to interpret and does not establish what caused the original drop.
Know what support can promise
A service can help organise the evidence, prepare a relevant review and assess available options. It cannot set Instagram’s distribution or promise a fixed number of impressions. Clearing a documented restriction and restoring a historical reach level are separate outcomes.
